Mara thought starving it was too slow. "If it eats voices," she said, "let's choke it." She set up every speaker we owned and queued hours of recorded talking. Then she hit play. Voices flooded the house from every corner, hundreds at once, and the walls began to shudder.
A low groan rose from under the floor, like something gagging on a meal too big. The floorboards in the center split apart, and down in the gap I saw the old brass cone from the photo, black with age, shaking hard. "It's overloading!" I yelled, grabbing a hammer. I swung down before it could swallow all that noise. The cone shattered, and a long sigh rushed out the windows. Then normal quiet.
