The House That Listens
horror◐ Teen5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
I raced home and told Mara everything. "We stop talking inside the house," I said. "We starve it." So we wrote notes instead. For two days we passed paper back and forth and never made a sound. The house grew colder and quieter, like something hungry waiting for us to slip.
On the third silent day, the notes worked too well. Mara forgot how to start a sentence. She opened her mouth and nothing came out, not even a whisper. The house had taken her voice while she slept. She grabbed my arm, eyes huge, and pointed at her throat. We'd starved it, but it had taken the last meal first.
