The cafe owner overheard them and grinned. "Stranded travelers? I have a back room with old board games." They spent the afternoon playing checkers and losing badly to the owner's grandmother. By evening, the trains still hadn't moved. "Same time tomorrow?" Mara asked. Theo nodded fast. "Same time tomorrow."

They came back every day for a week. The trains stayed stuck, and neither of them complained. On the seventh evening, the owner slid them a free dessert. "You two," she said, "are not really waiting for trains anymore." Theo looked at Mara and knew the old woman was right. So they stopped pretending, and stayed.
