'Still going,' I said. We pushed through the storm and reached the star at last. The sky cleared and the waves dropped flat. In the calm water below, I saw the dark shape of a sunken rowboat on the sand. Grandma's old rowboat — the one she'd told me sank years ago.

Reyes wouldn't let me dive in the rough water. Instead he handed me Grandma's logbook from a locker. The last page read: 'I marked the sea so my grandchild would chase it. Being curious is how you beat being afraid.' I closed the book and smiled. She'd planned this whole trip for me.
