Emma's mother handed me the phone. "She got this text the morning she died." The message: "LEAVE SALTCREEK. TONIGHT." Sent at 2am from a blocked number. I looked up. "Did she?" The mother shook her head. "She said she'd be fine. She went for a swim anyway."

I called the county health department. A man named Tom answered. "The water," I said. "What's wrong with the water?" Long pause. "Who gave you that number?" "No one. I figured it out." He hung up. But twenty minutes later, a text: "Room 7, Route 9 motel. Come alone."

Tom picked me up at the motel. We drove to the beach. The water looked beautiful—blue and calm. "I've been thinking about retiring," he said. "Maybe moving away." I asked: "Why tell me all this if you're leaving?" He was quiet. "Because someone has to stay and watch. And I can't do it anymore."
