David Kim—victim #1—his signature was on the initial claim. But his wife said he never filed anything. I called the insurance company back. "Did David call to report damage?" "Yes. Three days before he died." I felt cold. "Let me hear the recording." Pause. "We don't keep those. We do keep them, but you can't."
I asked to hear David's call recording. The woman paused. "It doesn't exist. The call was made, but no recording. Then David's account was flagged as 'administrative error' and the claim disappeared." She whispered: "They make them disappear. All of them."
