Sefu pulled a wooden box from under the floorboards. It was heavy. Sefu: 'He left this. And a key.' The key was brass. Still shiny like he'd cleaned it recently. Sefu: 'For the basement. The door we were never supposed to open.'
Me: 'We should open the box first. See what's inside.' Sefu nodded slowly. The box had a latch, not a lock. Inside: papers. A journal. And a photo of Dad we'd never seen. Me: 'He kept a journal?'

The journal was dated. Recent. Months old. Page one: 'If you're reading this, I was right.' Sefu: 'Right about what?' Me: 'The water. He knew.' Sefu: 'He knew it was coming.' The next page said: 'Now you have twelve hours.'
