The house still smells like their father: pipe smoke and cold coffee. Mara, Theo, and Diane stand in the hallway together for the first time in nine years. Nobody speaks. Then Theo bumps the old record cabinet and the back panel slides loose. Behind it: a hidden shelf. On it, dozens of cassettes. Some labeled with dates going back decades. Others blank. "Oh my god," Diane whispers.

"Don't," Mara says. Just that. Theo and Diane both look at her. Mara's hands are shaking a little. "Something's wrong about this. If he wanted us to have them, he would've given them to us."

"We have a right to know," Diane says, hard. "He left them for us to find. This was intentional." "Or intentionally hidden," Mara shoots back. "Which means he didn't want us to know." "That's cowardly." Mara flinches.
