The Inheritance of Quiet Rooms

drama◐ Mature
6 contributors · 2 paragraphs deep

The house still smells like their father: pipe smoke and cold coffee. Mara, Theo, and Diane stand in the hallway together for the first time in nine years. Nobody speaks. Then Theo bumps the old record cabinet and the back panel slides loose. Behind it: a hidden shelf. On it, dozens of cassettes. Some labeled with dates going back decades. Others blank. "Oh my god," Diane whispers.

Theo's already on his phone, scrolling for the estate lawyer's number. "We don't touch anything until we know what the legal situation is," he says. Very Theo. Always the one thinking three steps ahead. "These could be evidence of something."

The lawyer's voice is careful on the phone. Professional. "Those cassettes could contain self-incrimination. If they do, you're not obligated to report them. But if you listen and don't report, that's different." Theo's head spins. "So... don't listen?" "I didn't say that," the lawyer says.
