"Fifty-three," Theo says, counting them out carefully. Fifty-three tapes. Spanning from 1988 to 2011. The year before their dad died. Diane looks pale. "He was recording himself for like... his whole life?" "Only on these dates," Mara says slowly. "Only on specific dates. Why?"
They play another tape. Then another. Same thing every time: their father's voice, talking into the machine like he's alone in the world. No music. No response. Just him. "He was processing," Mara finally says. "Using these to think out loud." Diane feels her chest go cold. Like they're invading something sacred.
