The lawyer's voice is careful on the phone. Professional. "Those cassettes could contain self-incrimination. If they do, you're not obligated to report them. But if you listen and don't report, that's different." Theo's head spins. "So... don't listen?" "I didn't say that," the lawyer says.
"You could argue they weren't notarized. Not formal legal documents," the lawyer says, and something in his tone makes it clear he's giving them permission. "You could burn them. Nobody would know." Diane stands up. "I want to listen first."
