"Are you real?" I asked. She smiled. "Does it matter?" "Yes." "Then yes. I'm real enough to do this." She touched my shoulder. The square shifted. The fountain ran backwards. The sun sank back toward noon. "We get one chance, Elias. One Tuesday. What do you do?"

I closed my eyes. Thought about that moment. The car. The push. The impact. All I had to do was not push. Let the moment stay as it was. Or push back. Change it. "I can't," I said. "I know," she said. "That's why you only see the sparrow." The square faded. Eleven o'clock came and went. The sparrow never landed.
