He's standing right behind me. 'I have been growing that pumpkin for eight months.' His voice is so quiet I almost miss it. Quiet is scarier than yelling. Quiet means he's calculating. Quiet means he's scared.

'I was here at dawn,' Mrs. Pratt says quietly. 'Watering. First light. The pumpkin wasn't here then. I would have seen.' Mr. Okafor's face goes white. 'Then it moved between 5 and 8 a.m.' He looks at Mrs. Pratt. 'While it was light.'
