The Understudy Always Knows the Lines

Mara refuses to go to the stage. She feels along the dark walls for any other door and finds a narrow service hatch. It opens onto a staircase going down. Taped to the first step, in her handwriting: "Down here is the prompt room. Everyone who ever forgot a line is still in it, waiting to be cued."
Mara goes down into the prompt room. Rows of people sit in the dark, all in old costumes, lips barely moving, each whispering one looped line forever. At the front sits an empty chair with her name on a card. She gets it now: this is the waiting room for forgotten leads. She turns to climb back up, but the staircase is gone, and a soft voice behind her whispers her opening line.
