The Understudy Always Knows the Lines

Mara peels the card off the mirror and flips it over. The back has more of her handwriting. "Check the costume rack. Lenore's old dress. Don't put it on." She turns. A dress hangs on the rack, deep red, exactly her size. A second card is pinned to the collar.

Mara ignores the warning and lifts the red dress off the rack. It's warm, like someone just took it off. When she holds it up, the mirror doesn't show her holding a dress. It shows another woman wearing it, mouthing words at her. Mara knows the face from the cast photos in the hall. It's Lenore.

Mara drops the dress, but Lenore's reflection stays in the mirror, now pressing both palms flat against the glass from the inside. "Wear it and I get to leave," Lenore says. "Don't, and we both stay. Your choice. But the theatre always gets one of us on that stage by eight." The clock on the wall reads 7:59, and Mara's hands reach for the dress without being told.
