They lowered the bell together, the chain rattling as it played out. Down and down they went, past chimneys and church towers, until the bank rose up out of the gloom. Iyla swam out with the key and pushed open the heavy vault door. Inside, instead of gold, sat rows of sealed glass jars filled with seeds.

Behind the seed jars, Iyla found a small steel box with her name scratched on the lid. Inside was a letter in her father's hand. "If you two are reading this together, then the sea gave me one good thing," it said. "It made you a team again. The seeds are for everyone. Don't let anyone take them."

Iyla read the letter aloud, and Sefu's eyes filled. They decided right there: the seeds would go free to every island that asked. They started with the ridge, then the far reefs, then villages they'd never even heard of. People began calling them the Seed Bringers. Their father's plan outlived the flood.
