Mara found a shoebox under the desk, stuffed with returned letters. Dozens of them, all from their mother, all addressed to the three kids, every one stamped 'RETURN TO SENDER' in their father's handwriting. "She never stopped writing to us," Mara said, her voice breaking. "He just sent every single one back."
They drove out the next morning and knocked on a small blue door. An older woman answered, and the second she saw their faces she covered her mouth and started to cry. "You came," she whispered. "I wrote and wrote. I thought you hated me." Mara shook her head. "We never got a single letter. But we're here now. That's what counts."
