Theo read the labels one by one, and his face went pale. "These aren't just notes," he whispered. He held one up with a shaking hand. "This one says 'Mom - the real story.' This one says 'The money.' And this one says 'Diane - what I did.' We have to pick one."

They put in the tape marked 'The money.' Their father confessed he'd sold their grandmother's land forty years ago and hidden the cash that was meant for all the cousins. "That's a fortune," Theo breathed. "Do we keep it, or give it back?" For once, the three of them had to decide something together.

They agreed to give it all back. Tracking down the cousins took weeks, and a few of them slammed the door in their faces. But when the last dollar was returned, the three siblings stood on the porch feeling lighter than they had in years. "He hid it to feel safe," Mara said. "We gave it back to feel free."
