Theo did the math out loud, then went quiet. "That's enough to change all of our lives," he said. "And enough to start a real fight between us." The three of them looked at each other, suddenly aware the money could heal this family or finish tearing it apart.
The fight blew up that night, in the same hallway where their father had ruled for decades. Then Diane shouted, "Listen to us. We're screaming in his house, just like he taught us." Everyone went quiet. One by one they sat down on the floor. "We decide it together," Mara said. "No more secrets, no more sending each other away."
