The Last Bus on Marrow Street

The woman's eyes fluttered open. 'Just my ankle,' she said. 'I'm fine, dear.' Eli helped her up and onto the warm bus, easing her into the front seat. He radioed it in calmly, then drove slow and steady so she wouldn't be jostled the whole way home.

Word of that night reached the depot. Far from a complaint, riders sent letters praising Eli for catching the woman who fell. On his last night, the depot manager rode along just to thank him in person. 'Thirty-one years,' she said, 'and you went out a hero.'
