The Last Bus on Marrow Street

The woman slipped on the icy curb and went down hard, just feet from the open door. She didn't get up. Eli killed the engine, grabbed the first-aid kit, and rushed out into the sleet to her side. 'Ma'am! Can you hear me?' he called, kneeling beside her.

She was breathing but couldn't move her leg. Eli pulled out his radio and called for an ambulance, then took off his own coat and laid it over her against the sleet. 'Help's coming,' he said, holding her hand. 'I'm not going anywhere.' He stayed there in the cold until the sirens came.
