At the hospital stop, the woman paused at the door. 'You broke a rule for me,' she said. 'Why?' Eli shrugged. 'Six more nights and this route's gone. Figured I'd spend them doing it right.' She smiled and squeezed his arm. 'Then do it right all week. People need that.'

The woman's words stuck with him. The next morning, Eli walked into the depot office and asked Marcus a question he'd never dared ask: could the route be saved if enough people spoke up? Marcus leaned back, surprised. 'Funny you ask,' he said. 'There's a vote next week.'

Eli and Marcus rallied the riders for the vote. They packed the meeting room and told story after story of the bus that got them to work, to family, to hospitals on icy nights. The board listened. The route was saved. Eli stayed on one more year to train the next driver.
