The Eleven O'Clock Sparrow

The boy's name was Sam. 'My grandpa used to bring me here every day to watch the sparrow,' he said. 'He passed away last month. I come at eleven so it feels like he's still here.' Elias sat down beside him on the bench.

At that exact moment, the sparrow dropped onto the third spoke, cocked its head, and stayed. Sam gasped and grabbed Elias's arm. They both held still for forty seconds, then the bird flew off. 'It came back,' Sam whispered, smiling for the first time. 'Grandpa would've loved that.'
