'I scared it off,' Sam admitted, looking guilty. 'I tried to feed it bread crumbs and it flew up to the roof of the bakery. It won't come down.' He pointed to the tiny brown shape on the dark, shuttered bakery. 'Now it's stuck up there.'
Elias dug an old bag of birdseed from his coat pocket. 'Forget the bread,' he said. 'Watch.' He scattered seed along the fountain's edge and stepped back. After a long, quiet minute, the sparrow drifted down from the bakery roof and began to eat. Sam beamed. 'You did it!'
