Elias hurried back to the fountain to say goodbye to the spot. There on the third spoke he found a twig nest with two tiny eggs. If they tore down the fountain Thursday, the eggs would be lost. He had to tell someone, fast.

Elias called the local paper and the bird-watching club. By noon, a reporter and a wildlife officer stood at the fountain photographing the nest. 'You can't demolish an active nest,' the officer told the foreman. The bulldozer rolled away. The eggs were safe, and Elias could finally breathe.
