Devon clamped his hand over his own mouth. Across the water, the voice called his name again, sweeter this time, almost begging. He shook his head no. The voice tried Mara's name, then Priya's. They all stayed silent. After a long minute, the calling stopped, and the air went heavy and still.
When the calling finally stopped, the three of them ran for the car without a word and didn't slow down until the lake was miles behind. They never aired the episode. Some nights Devon still hears his name in his sleep, soft across dark water, and he always wakes up before he answers.
