Signal Lake Has No Echo

Devon followed the dead spot with his headphones on. The closer he got to the water, the quieter the world became, until he couldn't even hear his own footsteps. Then, faintly, through the silence, he heard a kid's voice counting. "One. Two. Three." He ripped the headphones off. The lake was empty.

Devon told the others about the counting voice. Mara wanted proof, so they set the recorder by the waterline and waited. At sunset, the playback gave them a child's voice counting to five, then stopping. It always stopped at five. "There's a six missing," Priya whispered.

They wouldn't stop at five. Mara leaned over the recorder and said the missing number out loud: "Six." The playback hissed, then a small voice answered her, clear and close: "You found me." The bubbles in the lake went calm. Whatever had been counting for nineteen years had finally been counted back in.
