The Ledger of Borrowed Names
mystery◐ Mature5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
The woman tells Mara to meet her at the old train station at midnight, alone. Mara goes. Under the flickering lights, a gray-haired woman steps forward holding an identical black book. "Your father kept two," she says. "One for the names he saved. One for the names he sold to the wrong people. You're holding the wrong one."
Before Mara can answer, headlights flood the platform. The gray-haired woman's face goes pale. "They followed you," she hisses, and shoves both books into Mara's arms before running. Mara is left alone on the platform, two black books clutched to her chest, as three car doors slam shut in the dark behind her.
