Mara searches the entry beside her name. A phone number is scribbled in the margin. Hands shaking, she dials it. A woman answers on the first ring. "You found his book," the woman says calmly. "Good. Now listen carefully, because the people who paid him are still looking. And they don't know he's dead yet."
Mara hangs up and decides to hide. She rents a motel room under a fake name from the book. It feels clever — until the front desk calls. "A man is here asking for you by that exact name." Mara slips out the bathroom window, drives through the night, and finally calls the calm woman back. "Now you understand," the woman says. "Stop running. Come work with me, and we end this together."
