The Ledger of Borrowed Names

mystery◐ Mature

Mara can't burn it. Instead she drives to her aunt's house for answers. The door is unlocked, the lights off. On the kitchen table sits an old photo of Mara as a baby — and a different name written on the back in her father's handwriting. Her aunt is gone. The back door swings open in the wind.

Mara grabs the photo and runs to her car. Whoever took her aunt could still be close. She locks the doors and drives. At the first red light she notices a man crouched in her back seat. "Keep driving," he says quietly. "I was one of your father's clients. Someone's killing everyone in that book, and you just became next on the list. Let me help you, or we both die."
