Nine Tenants, Eight Keys
mystery◐ Mature5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Edda checks the rent stubs for room 9. Every stub is paid, on time, for eleven years straight. But the handwriting keeps changing. Eight different hands, taking turns, year after year. The whole house has been covering for her, or for something.
Edda has the cellar dug up that afternoon. Under the dirt floor lies Dahlia, wrapped in a quilt, the ninth key clutched in her bones. She holds it up to the eight tenants. They break, one by one. The landlord came for back rent eleven years ago, shoved Dahlia in the dark, and she didn't get up. They buried her together and never stopped paying. Case closed, and broken.
