That night Coyle drank himself to sleep with the tapes still spinning. When he woke, the box was gone and his front door hung open. Someone had heard the recorder through the thin walls. They knew exactly what he'd found, and now they had it.

Coyle drove to the bakery on a hunch. Margaret Hale opened the door already pale. "You took them," he said. She didn't deny it. "Forty years I kept this town's secrets," she whispered. "I won't let a drunk priest spill them." Then she saw the squad car Coyle had called, parked behind him, and her shoulders fell.
