The Scarecrow Counts to Twelve
horrorEveryone5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Wren reads fast. The notebook says: bring the scarecrow something it lost, before sundown. On the last page is a pressed, dried sunflower and the words, "This was the first thing it ever guarded. Give it back." Wren grabs the flower and runs for the field, sun already sinking low.
Wren reaches the field, but the sun drops below the hills before they arrive. Too late. The scarecrow's arm is already pointing at their house, locked in place. Wren stands there clutching the useless flower, and far behind them, they hear their own front door swing slowly open.
