The Scarecrow Counts to Twelve

Wren asks the only question that matters: "How do I stop it?" Mr. Pell finally meets their eyes. "Same way it started. Someone has to climb the pole and take its place willingly. The one who does sets all the others free." Wren swallows hard and looks out the window at the field.

Wren walks out to the field and climbs the pole. It's cold and the straw bites their hands, but they don't stop. As Wren takes the scarecrow's place, eleven lights bloom across the valley, every empty home filling with warmth again. Wren can't move now, but they can watch, and they smile, knowing everyone is finally safe.
