The Mirror Maze Keeps One

I stumbled back into Theo, and we both stared as every reflection in the maze stopped copying us. They turned their heads toward the center of the hall, all at once, like they heard something we couldn't. "We have to go," Theo breathed. "Right now."

Theo grabbed the flashlight off the floor, and the second the beam hit center, every reflection lunged at the glass at once, hundreds of hands slapping it from the inside. The mirrors cracked in long screaming lines. "RUN," Theo shouted, and we sprinted blind toward the wind.

We poured out the broken board as the whole Hall of Mirrors collapsed behind us in a roar of breaking glass. On the cold pier we counted: six. All six, cut and shaking, but ours. The condemned building was finally just rubble. Nobody ever takes the dare now. There's nothing left inside to keep anyone.
