The Mirror Maze Keeps One

The chain worked until it didn't. The hallway split into three, and our arms got tangled pulling different ways. "This one," Maya insisted, tugging left. The glass on the left showed seven of us walking now, not six. One extra reflection, smiling, keeping pace.

Maya counted us out loud as we walked. "One, two, three, four, five, six... seven?" Her voice cracked. The seventh reflection peeled away from the glass and joined our chain, slipping its cold hand into mine. It looked like Jay, smiling too wide. The real Jay was three people down, white as a sheet.

I dropped the cold hand and shouted, "That's not Jay, run!" The chain broke into a panicked sprint. The fake Jay shrieked and grabbed for us, but we were already crashing out the broken board into the night. We counted on the pier, breathless. Six. The right six. We checked everyone's chin scars and freckles twice.
