Letters to the Lighthouse We Never Built
dramaEveryone5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
On the third day, digging for the foundation, Mara's shovel hit a metal box. Inside was a rusted tin holding a letter in faded handwriting. It was from Theo's grandfather, who'd started the lighthouse decades ago and never finished it. "Whoever reads this," it said, "please light it for me." Theo's hands shook as he read it aloud.
They decided the lighthouse would honor all three generations. They mounted the grandfather's letter in a glass case at the base, beside their childhood crayon drawing. When the lamp finally lit, an old woman in the crowd wept. "That's my husband's father's dream," she whispered. Theo took Mara's hand. Three generations, one light, finally shining.
