Theo got so deep in the true version that he missed midnight. The football essay was never submitted. The deadline was gone. He stared at the clock, then at his sleeping brother, and felt his stomach drop.
Theo woke Marcus and told him the deadline had passed. Marcus stared at the dark window, then surprised him with a laugh. "Guess I'm taking a gap year." It wasn't the plan, but for the first time in months Marcus actually sounded relieved.
