A woman answered instead. Eli's wife, Priya. She stepped onto the porch and pulled the door shut behind her. "Whatever this is, my husband doesn't need it," she said quietly. "He's spent ten years getting better. Why are you here?"

"You're right," Dana said. "I'll go." She turned to leave. Then Eli's voice came from inside the house. "Wait," he called. He'd heard everything through the open window. "Let her finish. I want to know what he said."

Dana told him everything, gently. Eli listened, then shook his head. "He doesn't get my face at his bedside," he said. "But you can take him a message. Tell him I'm okay. Tell him I made it anyway." Dana wrote it down word for word.
