The Gardener of Slow Light
sci-fiEveryoneMira followed the sensor down through the station's belly to a sealed hatch she'd never opened. The light was strongest here. She pried the hatch open and found a small room she didn't know existed — full of plants, all glowing softly, all turned to face one dark wall. They were waiting for something too.
Mira stepped into the hidden room, and the glowing plants leaned toward her instead of the wall. In the center sat a single seed pod, big as her fist, pulsing with that strange slow light. A note in her grandmother's writing was taped beside it: "Plant this in the last greenhouse before Veil dies. It will carry the garden home." Mira lifted the pod, carried it up to her vines, and pressed it gently into the soil. It sank in and began to glow.
