The Memory Foundry

Mara doesn't scan it. She slides the canister into her coat and keeps working, logging the others like nothing happened. The cameras blink red in the corners. If anyone checks the count tonight, one canister will be missing, and it'll have her name on it.

At home, Mara sets the canister on her table and stares at it for an hour before she dares to open it. Inside the glow is a memory of a man's face she half-knows, and a feeling so happy it almost hurts. She has no idea who he is. But her body remembers him, even though her mind was scrubbed clean.

Mara takes the canister to the public records office and matches the man's face to a name: her husband, recorded as dead. But the death date is the same week she started at the Foundry. She never grieved him because they erased him. She walks out with the file, ready to prove the Foundry kills the past it sells. It's the first true thing she's known in six years.
