"I was awake because I couldn't sleep," Mara said. "That's all." The drone's blue light dimmed, thinking. "That happens sometimes," it admitted. "We usually catch it before the eyes open." It drifted closer. "I can let you forget the easy way, and you'll wake up fine. Or you can stay awake and learn what the Quiet Hour is really for. But once you know, you can't unknow it."

"Let me forget," Mara said, suddenly very tired. "I have a test tomorrow." The drone's light softened. "Smart choice." A warm hum filled her ears, and her eyelids grew heavy right there on the sidewalk. She woke in her own bed at 7 a.m. with sun on her face and no memory of the night, just a finished calculus problem on her desk she didn't remember solving.
