The Quiet Hour Protocol
sci-fi◐ Teen5 contributors · 4 paragraphs deep
Outside, the air felt thick and still. Mara walked up to the frozen man and waved a hand in front of his eyes. Nothing. But his watch was glowing, ticking down: 00:48, 00:47. Every frozen person had one. The whole city was on a timer. When it hit zero, they'd all wake up. And she did not know what happened to someone caught standing in the street.
Mara pulled the glowing watch off the frozen man's wrist. The second it left his skin it went dark, and so did three streetlights down the block, like she'd unplugged part of the system. Across the city she heard a low click, a thousand watches resetting at once. The timer in her hand jumped back to 00:60 and started again. She'd just bought everyone one more minute, awake.
