Mara grabbed her phone. Dead. The streetlights outside were dark too. She pressed her face to the window and froze. The man across the street had stopped mid-step on the sidewalk, one foot in the air, perfectly still. It wasn't sleep. The whole city was paused. She had to see it up close. She pulled on her shoes and ran for the door.

Mara ran down the middle of the empty street, past frozen joggers and a paused bus full of still passengers. At the corner she stopped cold. A repair crew in gray suits was moving between the frozen people, calm and quick, adjusting them like mannequins. They were awake too. And one of them turned and looked right at her.

The gray-suited worker walked toward her, hands up. "Easy. You're awake, that's rare, but it's not the end of the world." Up close he looked tired and human. "We keep the city running while it sleeps. Pipes, wires, bad dreams, all of it. You can walk home and forget, or you can grab a suit and help. We're always short on hands."
