The Quiet Hour Protocol

sci-fi◐ Teen

Mara stayed put, gripping her pencil. She counted in her head. If the Quiet Hour was sixty seconds, she just had to wait it out and pretend she'd slept like everyone else. Forty seconds left. Thirty. Then her dead laptop screen flickered on by itself and showed three words in plain white text: WE SEE YOU.

Mara slammed the laptop shut and shoved it under a pillow. If they could see through screens, she'd take the screens away. She sat in the dark, breathing slow, counting down. At 3:01:00 every light blazed back on. The fridge hummed. Traffic moved again. It was over. Except a single new file sat on her desktop, named OPEN ME.

Mara clicked OPEN ME. A short message filled the screen: YOU STAYED CALM. MOST PANIC. The cursor blinked. WE COULD USE SOMEONE LIKE YOU AT 3 A.M. Below it, a single button: YES or LATER. Mara stared at her own tired face in the dark screen, then reached for the trackpad, knowing that whatever she clicked, she would never sleep through the Quiet Hour the same way again.
