The Boy Who Backed Up the Sky

sci-fi◐ Teen

Milo screenshots the sky, then races home to tell his sister Priya. She's older, smarter, and never believes anything. He shoves the phone in her face. To his shock, she goes pale. 'I saw it too,' she whispers. 'On the bus. I thought I was just tired.'

Priya grabs a flashlight and a notebook. 'If the sky has a seam, the world has edges,' she says. 'Let's go find one.' They head to where the highway used to keep going. Now it just stops at a gray wall of static, humming softly.

Milo reaches out and touches the wall of static. It's warm and buzzing, and his hand sinks in to the wrist. On the other side he feels keys, a keyboard hidden inside the edge of the world. 'Type something,' Priya breathes. Milo types HELP. The static ripples and words appear: ADMIN, IS THAT YOU?
