Wren climbed into the sunken boat and grabbed the rope. To her shock, the lantern's light lifted the whole boat free of the mud, gliding it across the water toward the far shore where a single window glowed. Someone over there had been waiting a very long time.

The boat slid to the far shore, and an old woman stepped out of the lit house, weeping with joy. "My Eli sent you," she said, taking Wren's hands. The lantern rose, circled them both once in a slow gold ring, then drifted up and out over the river, its long journey finally done.
