The Lantern That Walked Home
fantasyEveryone5 contributors · 3 paragraphs deep
Wren didn't trust it. She cupped her hand and pinched the wick hard to snuff it. The flame slipped sideways through her fingers without burning her, then flared back up, brighter, almost insulted. Clearly this lantern was not going to be put out.
Stubborn herself, Wren grabbed a bucket of river water and dumped it right over the lantern. The paper should have died instantly. Instead the water hissed into gold steam, and the flame stood there bright as ever. Soaked and amazed, Wren sat down hard on the grass and finally laughed. "All right. I give up. I'll follow you."
