Veska followed the bodies backward. All eleven silent dead had passed through one place before reaching her: the town's free soup kitchen, run by a gentle old healer everyone trusted. She did not want to believe it. But the bones did not lie, and they all pointed to the same kind face.

Before Veska could act, the healer came to her, setting a bowl of soup down between them. "You understand bones," the old woman said gently, "so you understand mercy. The plague is real, child, but it is slow and cruel. I only made the ending kind." Veska looked at the steaming bowl and did not yet know if it was a confession or her own last meal.
