Vesna doused her lantern and pushed the sled off the trail behind a boulder. The followers passed close, four of them, whispering Doru's name and a price. They weren't his men. They were here to take the crates from her.
Vesna stepped out and offered the four a deal: half her pay to guide them safely back down before the storm closed the pass. They were freezing and lost. Their leader hesitated, then nodded and lowered his gun. On the mountain, a good guide was worth more than any cargo.
